How many commands do dogs understand?

Dogs have the ability to understand and respond to a wide range of commands. On average, well-trained dogs can understand and reliably respond to around 20 to 30 different commands. However, some highly trained working dogs, such as service dogs or police dogs, can understand and execute a much larger number of specialized commands, often exceeding 50 or more. The exact number of commands a dog can understand may vary based on factors such as breed, individual intelligence, training methods, and the amount of time and effort dedicated to training.
